Hi my name is Rehaan Khaneja and this is the 13th podcast in the Leadership Speaks series, where I interview successful leaders of India's business world.

INTRODUCTION

In this episode, I chat with Sanjeev Bikhchandani - Early investor in India's billion-dollar Unicorn startups such as Zomato and Policybazaar. Through his venture capital company Info Edge, Mr. Bikhchandani has leadership positions in high-traffic customer segments such as job search (Naukri.com), matrimony website jeevasathi.com; Real Estate (99acres.com) and Education (shiksha.com).

In our chat, Mr. Bikhchandani shares his view of investing in startups with some interesting stories of how billion dollar companies start from small ideas to solve day-to-day problems. In today's world it might be harder to identify clear gaps since social media and other sources are already filling the information gap in some way, but the basic rule is to Focus on prospective customer, Understand the unsolved problem, and execute to solve it.

KEY LEARNINGS

In this chat with Mr. Bikhchandani, here are two things I learnt from his life experience

This interview is about identifying opportunities in every day life and grabbing them early. Here is a real life example of a person who took calculated risks when he saw huge early opportunities in Indian startups. Those bets have grown to billion dollar Unicorns today.

1st: "If you are able to find a gap in people's needs, and if you fill that gap, your business ideas can succeed"

In today's world it might be hard to identify clear gaps since social media and other sources are filling so many information gaps at zero cost, but the basic rule is to Focus on prospective customer, Understand their unsolved problem, and work to solve it efficiently.

2nd: "Don't be in a hurry to be an entrepreneur. Youngsters should build a good foundation first"

It is a good idea for ambitious youngsters to take their time. It is important to focus on our studies since education will open doors to new and better opportunities in later life.

"Others might also have seen the opportunity in Zomato, but we got there first!"
