The Business of India's Educational Institutions - Vasvi Bharat Ram's views on running schools.
Vasvi Bharat Ram is Joint Vice Chairperson of The Shri Ram Schools, Delhi, and member of the Executive Committee of The Shri Ram Schools.
Hi my name is Rehaan Khaneja and this is the 17th podcast in the Leadership Speaks series where I interview the most successful and influential leaders of India.
INTRODUCTION
As a prominent leader in the education sector, Ms.Vasvi is an educator who shapes India's premier and most well known education institutions. She is strongly focused on cultural values in educational institutions rather than on exams and marks. She works to make education available to the underprivileged, not only in form of studies, but also their inclusion in all school activities on par with all other students.
The story she shares in this chat is very relevant to youngsters and students like me. We get a glimpse into the business of Education and the responsibility teachers and educators bear towards the betterment of society.
"For our School, it has never been about the Exam Toppers. If the school exam average results has gone up for all students, then we consider it a success."

KEY LEARNINGS
Here are two things I learnt from the experience of Ms. Vasvi Bharat Ram as a leader in India's education sector:
1st: "An Educational institute's success can be measured neither in terms of profit nor in no. of exam toppers."
Running educational institutions is a tricky business. It is not right to compare them to profit-seeking companies, nor one that exists only to produce exam toppers. The best educational institutions measure happiness quotients of students, teachers and parents. If every student and every teacher looks forward to coming to school every day to learn and grow, that's success.
2nd: "It is probably easier to get admission to Harvard Business School than to IIM Ahmedabad."
Many Indian students underestimate the value of our own educational institutions, as well how high the demand is to get into a premier Indian institute. While most of us youngsters dream of going abroad to study, the reality is that that our own institutions are just as highly valued, and it takes a lot of hard work for students to get into them.
Talking to Ms. Vasvi has been such a positive experience for me. As a school going student, today I got to see education from a whole new perspective. "Educational institutions might not necessarily be for-profit companies, The idea is not to run it as a business, but eventually all institutions must aim to become self-sustaining and not depend on charity."
